1. Is this covered by my insurance?
Most insurance companies cover 70-100% of both the sleep study and the DME purchase (CPAP machine). Your coverage will depend on your own personal insurance plan.
2. Can my spouse spend the night with me?
If we have available space, it is perfectly acceptable for your spouse to join you. However, your spouse is required to sleep in an adjacent bedroom.
3. How long does the study take?
The study will require at least six hours for actual testing; the time will start when you have fallen asleep. The study may take up to eight hours if you are tested and treated (CPAP machine and mask are applied) in the same night. You can specify a time you would like to wake up in the morning and we will do our best to ensure we have collected enough data.
4. What do I need to bring with me to the study, will I be comfortable?
Please bring your insurance card so that we can make a copy of it. You may also bring your own pillow if you desire. Bring sleepwear along with a book, magazines or anything else you need to be comfortable. We have private rooms, queen size beds, cable T.V., fans, and DVD/VHS players in each room. We will send out information to you prior to the study, which will explain the study night in more detail.
5. What if I am unable to fall asleep?
Most people that come in for a sleep study are sleep deprived and have little to no problem falling asleep.
If you are nervous,
we will contact your primary care
provider and ask that a sleep aid be called into your pharmacy for the evening
of the test.
Please do not take your own sleeping medications without prior approval.
6. What if I have to get up to use the restroom?
No problem. You will simply call us through the intercom in your room and we can very quickly un-hook one snap so you can move and walk freely. When you are back in your bed we will re-connect you and resume the test.
What Happens Next?
Your provider will fax an order to our attention and we will call you to schedule your appointment. Before hand, we will call your insurance carrier to verify your coverage and benefits; this information will then be relayed to you in our phone conversation. During our call to you, we will also ask for some additional information, such as your address so that we can mail you some informational brochures and a pre-study questionnaire. Please try to fill out as much of the questionnaire as you can and bring it with you to your appointment, along with your insurance card.
Some additional information:
Please do not use any products on your hair prior to your study (hair spray, gel). Also, your hair must be dry. Do not apply any body lotions. We have some VHS movies available, but you may bring your own favorite. You can let us know when you need to get up in the morning, but please remember we need at least six hours of data. Avoid alcoholic and caffeinated beverages prior to your appointment, and try not to take any naps that day. Please bring all of your P.M. and A.M. medications with you to your appointment.
